A chilling news report from Iloilo has raised concerns about the effects of easy and unsupervised access to technology on the age of criminals, which seemed to only go younger and younger each year.

The alarming news was that of an 11-year old grade 4 pupil, who was gang-raped and sexually violated by her own schoolmates, 4 grade 5 pupils in Ajuy, Iloilo.

According to the Chief of Police of the Ajuy Municipal Police Station, Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, the incident happened last March 6, but was only reported earlier this week.

According to Sustento, the perpetrators were only aged 11, 12, 14 and 15, and are all only in their grade 5 of basic elementary education.

According to authorities, the four suspects invited the victim to play with them in the mountains in the area, where they each took a turn in sexually abusing and violating the helpless 11-year old victim.

The crime was only discovered when the victim told her parents about what her four schoolmates did to her.

Authorities theorize that the incident was spurred by the sexual curiosity of the minor perpetrators since they admitted to watching pornographic videos before the incident.

According to Sustento, the perpetrators may have been trying to imitate what they have seen on the lascivious videos, that is why they were able to commit such a shocking crime.

The victim, on the other hand, underwent medical examination, and counseling for what she experienced.

If the victim, or her family, ever decides to file a case against the perpetrators, only the 15-year old suspect can be held criminally liable as stated in Republic Act 9344, or otherwise known as the Juvenile Justice and Welface Act of 2006. This is because the age of criminal liability in the Philippines is set to 15 years old.

Meanwhile, the other perpetrators cannot be held criminally liable for their minority.
