Catriona Gray, 22 years old, a Filipino-Australian model and host hailing from Albay, is the new Miss World 2016.

She finished her education from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, with a Master Certificate in Music Theory.

Gray bested 23 other candidates to earn the crown herself during the coronation ceremony held at Manila Hotel earlier this week. She took the crown from her predecessor Hillarie Parungao.

Aside from winning the crown, Gray was also awarded as Miss Manila Hotel, Miss Hannah, Best in Swinsuit, Best in Fashion Runway and Best in Evening Gown.

She was also awarded Miss Figlia, Miss Folded & Hung, Miss Organique, and Miss Talent during the charity night gala of the competition last week.

She was an early favorite among the candidates in the pageant. However, what most probably secured her spot was her question and answer portion after the announcement of the Top 12. She blew away both the judges and the audiences with her perfectly crafted answer.

Her question in the pageant was: “When you get up in the morning and look in the mirror, what do you see?”

“I see someone who is constantly trying to be better. I’ve always endured to always be better than the day before, to do things that challenge me, to do things outside the box. And something that is very fulfilling that I have found is when I look in the mirror, I want to see someone who gives back to the community, and that’s someone who I achieve to be every single day.” – Catriona Gray in her question and answer portion in the Top 12.

She further cemented her bid for the crown during the Final 5 of the competition, when all the contestants were asked a similar question: “Why do they deserve to be the next Miss World Philippines titleholder?”

“To be a Miss World is to be passed a torch that burns with passion, and purpose. If I become Miss World Philippines, I will carry my voice and my essence to carry that torch and to set charitable causes alight, such as my personal advocacy, the Paraiso Bright Beginnings Project. And I would focus on passing on this torch to empower others because I believe together, there is no darkness in this world that our light cannot overcome.” – Catriona Gray

Upon winning the crown, Gray expressed feeling overwhelmed. She said that even if she knew she had the support of the media, and her friends, she still did not expect to win. Still though, she said she gave her best in the competition and the subsequent crown on her head because of her efforts felt very rewarding.

Gray’s next agenda as the new Miss World Philippines 2016 is to represent the country and compete in the Miss World Beauty Pageant on December 18, in Washington, D.C.
