As if it is not clear enough that majority of the Filipinos can sing, and Filipinos have one of the best singing voices in the whole world, another Filipino brings pride to the country as she conquers a major reality TV singing competition! And in a foreign land at that!
Janice A. Buco, a Filipina expat based in Hanoi, Vietnam, won as the grand winner of the seventh season of Vietnam Idol just this Friday, September 30.
She not only bested Vietnam’s local talents and went on to win VND600 million as cash prize, she also garnered 54.25% of the audience votes. She is also the first Filipina and the first expat to ever win in the said televised singing competition.
Janice A. Buco, 28 years old, is more popularly known under the name Janice Phuong in the prestigious singing contest.
She is married to a Vietnamese and has been living in Vietnam for more than seven years. She works as a singer in a bar to help her family back in the Philippines.
She took the opportunity to join the TV reality singing competition when it opened its auditions to expats for the very first time.
Her song pieces throughout weeks in the competition were a mix of English and Vietnamese songs.
She went head to head with Viet Thang, 22 years old, in the grand finals, who subsequently became her runner up in the singing competition.
Her finale and winning piece that charmed and endeared local audiences in the grand finals of Vietnam Idol was popular song ‘Hello Vietnam’. She sung her rendition of the song in mixed English and Vietnamese.
Vietnam Idol is a televised singing competition largely based on the format of its British equivalent, Pop Idol, and it’s US equivalent, American Idol.
