Actor Mark Anthony Fernandez was arrested on Monday, October 3, in the province of Pampanga for possession of illegal drugs, specifically, marijuana.

Chief Inspector Francisco Guevera Jr. shared that the actor was arrested because he tried to slip past a police checkpoint located at MacArthur Highway in Barangay Virgen Delos Remedios at about 8:30 PM in the evening. Police Chief Superintendent Aaron Aquino, Region III Police Director, also confirmed the report.

The resultant car chase led the police to puncture the tire of Mark Anthony’s car, and he was subsequently arrested in San Fernando City, Pampanga.

More than 1 kilogram of marijuana, with an estimated value of at least PHP 15,000, was recovered inside the former matinee idol’s car.

In his defense, Mark Anthony claimed that not all of the marijuana confiscated in his car is actually his. He said he only owns a small portion of the marijuana, aside from the 1kilo found in his car. He also said that his stash was for medicinal purposes to prevent cancer, and that what the police recovered is already his one-year supply.

He is currently incarcerated at Station 6 of the Angeles City PNP, and is scheduled to undergo drug testing.

He will be facing charges for violations of Section 5, 11 and Section 15 of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. He is also not entitled to bail under the said special law.

Mark Anthony is the son of deceased actor Rudy Fernandez, and actress and former Parañaque councilor Alma Moreno.

He rose to fame as a member of popular teenage group “Gwapings” in the 1990’s along with Erick Fructuso and Jao Mapa.

This is not the actor’s first involvement with drugs. In fact, he previously underwent voluntary drug rehabilitation at the Bicutan Rehabilitation Center back in 2004, after drug charges against him were dropped. He made his showbiz comeback after undergoing six months of drug rehabilitation.

Mark Anthony is the third showbiz personality to be arrested because of involvement with illegal drugs. The first two are sexy stars Sabrina M and Krista Miller.
