All of us are familiar with the ‘Fault in Our Stars’ movie, and most of us know that it was inspired by the story of two cancer-stricken individuals who eventually fell in love with each.

In Australia, a couple just like them exists: Dalton Prager and Katie Prager.

However, theirs do not have a happy ending.

Dalton Prager, the husband, held his last breath on Saturday afternoon while admitted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis. He was 25 years old. Katie Prager, the wife who is 26 years old, is still fighting with cystic fibrosis (CF) in another hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

According to Katie’s mother, Debra Donova, the couple communicated via FaceTime as Dalton was dying. Afterwards, Katie told her family that Dalton meant everything to her and that she will see him soon.

Donovan is unsure if Dalton was still able to hear Katie her while they were both on FaceTime.

The love story of Dalton and Katie started in 2008 when the two individuals came across each other’s Facebook profiles. They then decided to see each other in person despite their doctors strongly opposing their decisions.

The main reason for the opposition was the simple fact that CF can easily be passed on to others.

According to the medical team of doctors, Katie acquired a highly contagious infection from Dalton shortly after they met. The infection has called Burkholderia cepacia, But Katie had no regrets.

I told Dalton I’d rather be happy—like really, really happy—for five years of my life and die sooner than be mediocre happy and live for 20 years.

Their love is strong, and destiny was on their side. So on July 26, 2011, the two got married under an outdoor gazebo in Kentucky.

Even though their ending was not a blissful one, their story will forever stay in the hearts of those who love. Faith in love restored.
