Recently, a video of her auditions for the 1988 Broadway Production , Miss Saigon has been making rounds on Facebook, as uploaded by Bob Campo Belocura, Jr. If you didn’t know yet, at age 18, Lea Salonga originated the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, first in the West End and then on Broadway.
The musical is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War, and Madame Butterfly’s story of marriage between an American lieutenant and a geisha is replaced by a romance between an American GI and a Vietnamese bargirl.
